Mandela Day 2015
On the 17th of July 2015 we celebrated International Mandela Day. On this day 91 children, and 50 adults participated in a clean-up campaign that took place in Protea Glen Ext 11. Our Social Worker had talks with the children encouraging them to take care of the community facilities not only on Mandela Day but every day. They were also encouraged by the Protea Glen SAPS to report cases of facility vandalism taking place in the community. We are all capable of keeping our community clean and neat only if we work together.
16 Days of Activism 2015
Copessa hosted an awareness campaign on the 01st of December 2015 with the aim to highlight the high rate of domestic violence against women and children in Soweto. We were also aiming on encouraging the community members to report gender-based violence cases. Our main goal was to provide information to the community and referrals to organizations or resources that can be helpful to them.
We had speakers from Teddy Bear Clinic, Protea Glen Clinic, POWA, Protea Glen SAPS, Protea Court, SANCA, Child Line etc. All the organizations were given a chance to talk to us about the free services that they render and where their organizations are located.
Women’s Day Prayer Event 2015
Our country is plagued with violence caused by the high usage of drugs, unemployment etc. Women from Protea Glen gathered together in one of Copessa’s containers for a prayer meeting. We hosted a prayer event on the 20thof August 2015 where we pleaded with the community to assist in fighting the scourge. We prayed for drug abuse, domestic violence, restoration in our homes, safety for our children, burglaries in our community and safety of buildings and facilities.
Psalm 9:9-10 “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”
First basketball match
In February COPESSA Basketball Club had their first match against the Boys and Girls Club from Pimville. The COPESSA basketball club has been training since April 2015 at the Basketball Court behind Faranani Primary School. Since then the children made a great progress.
Before the match the kids had the chance to warm up with a professional Basketball player who was also the referee for the match. We had a fair and amusing match and our kids were motivated and enjoyed showing what they had learned during the training.
